“Roger had a great sense of fun and an innate sense of daring and adventure. A Bournemouth boy, he started messing about in small boats in Poole harbour before he was five. In his youth he crossed the Atlantic under sail several times in the most challenging seas.
Strength and determination were hallmarks of Roger’s character. His greatest test was being diagnosed with lymphoma. During chemotherapy, being confined to bed for long periods of time was difficult for him but it gave him time to think about what impression he might leave on the world.
Roger wanted to better understand his illness, and he cared deeply about ensuring that others facing lymphoma had access to reliable information, compassionate support and reassurance during an uncertain time.
As Roger thought about the future, he decided to make a lasting difference beyond his own lifetime. He chose to leave the bulk of his estate to organisations working to improve understanding, care and support for people affected by lymphoma. From that decision, the Roger Counter Foundation was born.
In the years since, Roger’s legacy has had an immense impact on Lymphoma Action’s work. Gifts from the Foundation have helped provide trusted information, emotional support and practical services to people affected by lymphoma, as well as improving awareness and education across the healthcare professional community.
Richard believes Roger would be deeply proud of the impact his legacy has had.
“Roger would be very proud that his legacy has given so much support for people living with lymphoma. It’s so important that we continue striving for awareness of lymphoma, earlier diagnosis and better treatments.
For my part, I’ve decided to pledge a gift in my own Will to Lymphoma Action. Leaving a legacy is a really practical thing you can do to help future generations – and for your loved ones to remember you by.
When thinking about the charities I could support, I chose those I have a strong connection with. I also looked at smaller organisations, like Lymphoma Action, as I believe gifts in Wills have a much bigger impact on their work and the people they help. From my long association with Lymphoma Action, I’m confident my future gift will be put to the best use.
As we celebrate 40 years of Lymphoma Action, legacies like Richard’s will help us be here for people affected by lymphoma for the next 40 years and beyond. We are so grateful to him, and every one of you who has chosen to pledge a gift in your Will. Together, you are helping to safeguard the future of our Charity and our community.
